Training Overview

CARDI’s mission is to assist the Royal Government of Cambodia achieve its rural development objectives by delivering high quality high value research as well as training and information services. Training plays an important role in delivery of quality research and development outcomes that meet the needs of the Cambodian community.

CARDI has a team of highly qualified scientists and engineers in agriculture and socio economic disciplines and is regarded as the leading centre for agricultural research expertise in Cambodia. It has been engaged in providing training services for many years and has a well designed and resources training facility located at CARDI.

CARDI’s Training and Information Program manages all training activities. Resource personnel for training are drawn from CARDI’s professional staff, and occasionally are supplemented by individuals from other institutions or organizations external to CARDI. With its links to the international science and agricultural communities, as well as its link to government, CARDI has access to a wide range of expertise and training resources.

Annually the CARDI training program offers 15 to 20 training events, typically attended by over 300 individuals. Much of the training is conducted at CARDI facility although a significant proportion is delivered in the field where trainees can practice and apply their newly acquired knowledge under typical Cambodian conditions.

In-country training includes short-term training courses, workshops, conferences, study tours, on-the-job training. In addition CARDI training staff work with other CARDI research programs to supervise final year students from Royal University of Agriculture and other institutions in theses and reporting on agricultural projects.

CARDI offers many opportunities for scientists and students to participate in its research and development programs. Through these opportunities CARDI is developing a team of well-trained and highly motivated scientists engaged in all types of modern agricultural practice engaged in agriculture research, extension, policy formulation and production. These opportunities also provide CARDI a means of strengthening its R&D capacity in critical areas.

CARDI Training to Clients

CARDI offers its training services to all RGC institutions, agricultural extension agencies, farmer communities, international governmental and other organizations, Non-Government Organizations, private sector and agencies responsible for agricultural project development within Cambodia.

The CARDI programs are designed for a range of participants, including senior and junior management levels, and also professional and technical field staff and farming communities. Participants frequently are professional staff undertaking agricultural activity within government including research and development, production, extension, distribution and marketing within the agricultural sector.

Training Philosophy

CARDI’s training program aims to build human resource capacity in Cambodia by developing skills, disseminating new and appropriate technology on modern agricultural practices, and providing other skills for national agricultural research and development projects, the private sector and farmers.

Training Objectives

  • Facilitate technology transfer of agricultural knowledge and related skills to personnel within Cambodian national agricultural research and development projects, Cambodian agriculture extension professionals and participant farmers.
  • Develop course participants’ knowledge and skill base including abilities to plan, organize and implement improved agricultural practices under Cambodian conditions.
  • Disseminate information on new and appropriate technologies for modern agricultural practice in Cambodia.
Support the human resource development in agricultural sector particularly Cambodian agricultural education institutions.

Training Methodologies

§  CARDI offers a broad range of training practice to meet client needs. Programs are usually intensive, and consist of a mix of technical presentations, panel discussions, case studies, field practice and field visits.

  • Specific training techniques include brain-storming, group discussion, lecturing, role-playing and demonstration. Course usually have theory and practice components.
  • Discussion, dialogue and exchange of ideas are intended to benefit all participants, and participants are encouraged to fully participate in this aspect of the course.
  • Well-qualified specialists from CARDI professional staff conduct all Programs. Some course presenters are from outside of CARDI. All presenters are experienced in the subject matter of the offered course.
  • All training participants are actively involved in group discussions, small project proposal preparation, and ‘hands on’ problem solving.
  • Groups of participants make presentations on challenges of relevant topics and have opportunities to share and workshop the challenges faced by their own organizations.
  • Participants performance is assessed through project presentation, pre- and post-examination and practical assessment of components of the course. Certificates are provided for successful completion of the course.
  • CARDI’s modern training facilities at Prateah Lang Commune Phnom Penh are used to conduct courses. As appropriate, or at client request, courses are delivered in the fiied where trainees can practice and apply their newly acquired knowledge and develop their skills under typical Cambodian conditions.
  • Course length varies, typically one to three weeks depending on nature of course.
  • Courses can be delivered in either Khmer or English.

Opportunities for Undergraduate/Graduate/Postgraduate Students

CARDI is not a degree granting institute. However, with the availability of facilities and expertise, CARDI can assist students to write their final report and thesis for their degree in field of plant breeding, plant protection, soil and water, agricultural engineering, socio-economics, agronomy and farming system, training and information technology, and  business and planning.

 

The thesis research can be conducted at CARDI headquarter or one of regional or bilateral program.

Selection Criteria (in order of priority)

1.      Candidates having a research interest in one or more areas of CARDI research.

2.      Candidates showing strong academic potential (good study record) and possess positive attitudes and good ethical behavior.

3.      Candidates with official permissions and approvals from their universities or colleges.

CARDI Training Facilities

Training

§         CARDI has excellent conference and dedicated training facilities, including a large library resource.

§         Facilities are computer networked-enabled, and a variety of multi-media are available.

 

Accommodation

CARDI offers full residency for course participants from regional centres. CARDI has quality fully-catered dormitory style accommodation in a delightful rural setting. This is available for all courses held at CARDI.

Training Fees

Program fees depend on the nature and duration of particular training program. The program fees cover the registration, transportation for both field trip and classroom activities, training materials, and refreshments. They do not cover medical and incidental expenses during the program, or any accommodation and travel costs.

Typical costs of the program fees are:

$ 110 per participant for 5 days or one week-course.

$ 200 per participant for 10 days or 2 week-course.

$ 280 per participant for 15 days or 3 week-course.

 

The program fee may be paid by check or Bank Draft or TT transfer in favor of CARDI.
